#GIRLBOSS is a book that gives you incite when it comes to starting on your own, whether it be business wise or just general life. Growing up is not easy, there are so many twists and turns in the road, some harder to maneuver than others, but having a little guidance along the way can help you steer better.
Sophia Amoruso is the CEO and founder of a really interesting and creative fashion business called Nasty Gal. Not only is it a very successful business, but it also is the stem for all of her other endeavors, like #GIRLBOSS.
Nasty Gal is a mishmash of vintage and modern day looks giving the consumer a chance to branch out of the traditional wear and to express herself however she deems right. Sophia didn’t have the traditional success that many businesses have, instead of going through the motions when starting a business, she went outside the box and built her brand in a way that no one else had done before.
Starting out as a young, 20-year-old girl who had never gone to college, Sophia needed money, and the only way to make money is to work. Numerous jobs and many explorations later, Nasty Gal began. It was created by a fleeting idea of buying vintage clothes from thrift stores and listing them on eBay hoping to make some extra cash.
What she didnt expect though was for everything to blow up. The way that she dressed her models so that they showed off the look and how the clothing accentuated the model made her brand more and more appealing. Her ability to take extreme measures with each and every piece, along with her great communication skills with her customers allowed her to expand and become a successful entrepreneur.
“When your goal is to gain experience, perspective, and knowledge, failure is no longer a possibility. Failure is your invention. I believe that there is a silver lining in everything, and once you begin to see it, you’ll need sunglasses to combat the glare. It is she who listens to the rest of the world who fails, and it is she who has enough confidence to define success and failure for herself who succeeds.” -Sophia Amoruso
Throughout her book she tells her readers exactly what they want to hear, she doesn’t sugar coat anything or try to make the readers like her. She tells them a story about her life in a way that was like talking with your best friend. She is conversational and honest, exposing the worst about herself but yet highlighting the best. Through her ability to connect personally with the reader she has the ability to uplift them, to make them see how amazing they are, inspiring them to see that they’re worth more than they think. There are many different paths that life may lead you down but its about how you control those paths and make the most of them that will show you who you truly are.
Within the book, Sophia adds in profiles of other Girlbosses that she finds interesting and amazing, sharing excerpts of their own experiences, how they got to where they are today. Some may have had a rough ride with lots of bumps and dead ends but they broke through the norm and became something amazing. Sophia shows the drive and the determination that each person has within to create something bigger than themselves.
Not only did this book show me how amazing it is to be female, but it inspired me to become more than myself. To work hard for what I want and to become more fearless with my desires. I want to become someone who can say that they did everything they wanted to without fear, and came out on top.
“You create the world, blink by blink. It is entirely yours to discover and yours to create.” -Sophia Amoruso
